Why newborns mix up day and night
In the womb, a baby isn't exposed to light-dark cycles, and their circadian rhythm (the internal biological clock that regulates sleep and wakefulness) hasn't formed yet at birth. The rhythm a newborn carries reflects the mother's movements and rhythms during pregnancy more than an actual day-night cycle, which is why in the early weeks sleep and wakefulness can seem randomly distributed across the 24-hour day.
How long this phase usually lasts
The circadian rhythm typically starts maturing around 6-8 weeks of age, with more noticeable consolidation by 3-4 months. This means that, with or without specific interventions, most babies naturally move past the day-night confusion phase within the first trimester — though some practical strategies can speed this process up.
The role of natural light in recalibrating the rhythm
Exposure to bright natural light during the day, especially in the morning, is one of the strongest cues to help the circadian rhythm mature correctly. Bringing the baby near a bright window or taking a short walk outside in the early morning hours helps "set the biological clock" naturally, far more effectively than any other trick.
