White noise is one of the most recommended, and most debated, products in the world of baby sleep. Some parents consider it essential, others find it useless. The truth, as often happens, sits in the middle: it works well for many babies, but only when used correctly — something most product labels don't explain clearly enough.
What the available research actually says
Studies on white noise for infant sleep generally show positive but not universal results: it helps many babies fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer by masking sudden household noises (a door, a sibling talking, traffic). It isn't a magic fix for every sleep issue, though, and some babies show no meaningful difference with or without it.
Why it works, when it works
The mechanism is simple: a constant, predictable sound "covers" the sudden noises that could otherwise wake or disturb a baby during light sleep phases. On top of that, if used consistently before bedtime, it becomes part of the routine and a cue associated with rest — a psychological effect layered on top of the purely acoustic one.
Volume and distance: the two details almost everyone gets wrong
General guidance recommends placing the device at least two meters (about six feet) from the crib and keeping the volume under 50 decibels — roughly the sound of a distant shower, not a vacuum cleaner. A volume that's too high, or a device placed too close, sustained for hours every night, are the two most commonly overlooked variables when choosing and positioning a white noise machine.
